You’ve heard it a million times: “It’s not what you know, but who.” There is a reason that saying is a cliche, and the reason is that it is true. It’s all about networking, networking, networking.  There’s a saying, “Networking is working.” And that is the truth about success in business.

Most business people know that networking is critical to their success, but few do it right. They will go into a social situation and try to expand their portfolio of business contacts, rather than working the room to make new friends. Remember, friendships drive success — not business connections. That’s why, historically, so much has been accomplished on the golf course.

I’m always telling people that it is more important that you know a person is addicted to Grey’s Anatomy than it is that you know specifics of their job. Friendships are everything. You simply have to put yourself in the right situations to make friends with the right people.
